2026 Book Club

This post series is here to talk about some of the books I'm reading as I think about the project and study up more on the original framers' ideas, how our government has worked over time, and suggestions people have for changing our government.

Right now, I'm reading:

Decision in Philadelphia - This is a historical account of the Constitutional Convention, including a look at many of the framers' histories and aspirations for the document that would be the Constitution.
by Christopher Collier and James Lincoln Collier

Six Amendments  - The second-longest-sitting Justice in Court history lets us know how he think the Constitution needs to change.
by (former Justice) John Paul Stevens

American Nations  - This book makes a case for viewing the country as 11 distinct nations with their own traditions and identities.  It has been very hard for me to read.  The author has a pretty abrasively condescending tone and is so convinced of his thesis that he often fails to make a case for it.
by Colin Woodward

The Bully Pulpit  - Taft v. Teddy, but importantly also the tale of corporate interests versus progressive ones.
by Doris Kearns Goodwin

and rereading:

The Presidents Club  - An intimate and often revelatory look at the relationships between the men who have been president.  I came out of the first read liking George H.W. Bush a lot more, and finding some new fault in presidents that I generally admire.  The book also provides a window into how presidents actually deal with the weight of being president.
by Nancy Gibbs and Michael Duffy
